IN PR, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO FLY ABOVE TO SEE CLEARER

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Am in San Diego this weekend after spending a few days in our rapidly growing LA office… What a beautiful amazing city San Diego is. I can see where many would talk about this as the greatest city in the U.S. to raise a family.

Being away on business always allows me to step back and see business clearly – consider angles I couldn’t see earlier, reflect on operations without being bogged down with details. A close friend of mine here, a very successful entrepreneur is training to be a pilot and flies once a week and said “Flying allows me to see things from way above – To analyze real estate from a higher angle to see things from above without clouds.” He’s so right… and while I am not yet ready to start flying, as much as I hate travelling I do enjoy the clarity that being away allows me to have when it comes to business… and recommend a few days away regularly for entrepreneurs. Get away and think clearer.

An after thought – I love NYC and can never see myself living anywhere else – The speed, the culture. WOW.

DON’T WAIT – CREATE: IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND IN LIFE

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Although I rarely agree with business magazines that I read, this month’s Entrepreneur Magazine had a really great op-ed I feel compelled to quote from – It talked about entrepreneurs and their lack of patience…

“If you are waiting for the right opportunity you are wasting valuable time. Entrepreneurs are generally not patient people – They make things happen. Don’t wait to raise money, for a better economic cycle or for interest rates to come down.” I AGREE WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS – SLEEP IS THE COUSIN OF DEATH…. DON’T WAIT – Create, figure it out and maybe you’ll make a few mistakes but speed matters.

“Waiting is a waste of time, and perfect timing is a myth. Perfect moments happen in movies.”

When I started my business, I took control… and didn’t wait. As Entrepreneur Magazine wisely points out, plan, research and explore… just don’t wait too long. Move quickly and be flexible.

As 5W grows (Over 70 employees these days), its harder to move as quickly as I’d like, and I often need to remind myself of the importance of going with my gut.

“Waiting doesn’t bring anything. It not only wastes time, it also costs opportunity.”

ABSORB EVERYTHING…

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Saw a good and interesting movie this weekend – Like many other cultural experiences, I found lessons applicable to life and work…. Movie is called:

“A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints”, and was a movie about a kid who grew up in a tough neighborhood and was a little bit of a troubled kid… and then one day picked up and left – Just left without saying goodbye.

The movie started and ended and throughout the movie had references to the quote: “I Left them all but they never left me.”

Of course this was a reference to his friends and family he felt he had to leave physically… but in his head they were with him.

Lesson:
Let every experience in life stick with you and learn from it. Let it help define you, but always look forward, not backward. Learn and absorb every step of the way.

Now, back to work…
