As a born and bred New Yorker I was quite saddened when Ed Koch died at the age of 88 this week. Koch was a bright, gregarious outgoing man whom I am the pleasure of knowing personally. We regularly exchanged letters and he was always blunt and honest in every word he said. He was a refreshing, special man.
One of my earliest memories is during the 1970’s NYC water drought when Koch was discussing the water drought. He spoke about how fire hydrants shouldn’t be opened during the hot summer, take short showers, don’t waste water and as I laughed aloud when I heard when he discussed flushing toilets, he famously replied “If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.”
The man had a great slew of one-liners and was a master of the press. Most importantly, Koch was a good man. He made a mark in this world and will be sorely missed.
