For people who like to be out and active in the marketing world, public relations might not seem like the most exciting career. There’s a common perception floating around that PR professionals spend their lives behind a desk, answering phone calls and responding to emergencies on social media. While it’s true that a lot of the PR experience can take place online, or from an office environment, there’s a lot more to it than most people think.

PR is no ordinary desk job. Every day brings with it a new opportunity for professionals to get out into the open world and flex their creative muscles – coming up with new and original ideas for their clients. After all, in a world where almost every industry is growing increasingly saturated, it’s important for PR professionals to find new ways of marketing to customers and earning their attention with insightful stories.

Research Is Critical

For a PR professional to be competitive in their post, they need to be willing to get out into the world and research the industry that they’re working in. Public relations teams are always looking for new ways to expand their understanding of different sectors, whether it’s hospitality companies like restaurants and breweries, or financial businesses like accounting firms.

Learning about the industry around a client can help PR professionals to come up with unique ideas for stories, while also ensuring that the client maintains the right reputation in their chosen area. After all, different customers are often searching for different things from the companies they work with. Competitive analysis can make it easier to determine what kind of characteristics any specific audience is searching for.

The Need for Networking

Another reason that most PR professionals won’t spend all their career behind a desk is that they need to get out and network with industry professionals. Networking is a critical part of what makes a public relations professional so successful. These experts are constantly building new relationships with industry experts and influencers in their fields so that they can issue press statements to the right media outlets at the right times.

Working in PR means being able to connect with people in a positive and engaging way. These professionals not only need to know what’s going on in the world, but they also need to know how they can leverage different parts of their network at difficult times to support their clients and customers.

Public Relations is an Exciting Career

While it’s true that some of the public relations experience can take place behind a desk, that doesn’t mean that PR is boring. It’s an exciting and stimulating experience that’s constantly delivering new challenges to the professionals in the field. Every day comes with a new opportunity for a public relations agent to prove themselves and their skills to the people in their field.

The fast-paced nature of PR makes it a fantastic opportunity for people who are ambitious, great at working with others, and willing to go above and beyond for the sake of their clients. Though it might include aspects of desk work – PR is so much more than a desk job.
