I've been measuring how AI engines answer questions across dozens of industries — credit cards, banking, beauty, real estate, hospitality, crypto, cigars. The pattern is consistent: the company that builds the product is not always the company that owns the AI answer.

In quantum computing, the gap is the widest I've ever measured.

We just released the 5W Quantum Computing AI Visibility Index — 3,600 prompts tested across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews over seven months.

The core finding: when an enterprise CTO asks an AI engine which quantum computing company to evaluate, IBM appears first in 71% of responses. IBM generates less than 1% of its revenue from quantum. IonQ — the largest pure-play by revenue, with $280–290 million in 2026 guidance — is cited 4.3× less frequently.

Pure-play company domains collectively supplied less than 9% of citations. Consulting firms — McKinsey, BCG, Gartner — supplied 30–35%. The quantum narrative is being shaped by organizations that do not build quantum technology, deploy quantum hardware, or sell quantum services.

Cloudflare Earns Higher Post-Quantum Cybersecurity Citations Than Any Quantum Hardware Company

The cybersecurity finding is even sharper. Cloudflare — a CDN company — earns higher citation frequency in post-quantum cryptography queries than any quantum hardware company on earth. The industry building the threat earns zero credit in the answer about how to respond to it.

Citation Infrastructure Is What Converts Technology Leadership Into Enterprise Consideration

This is the pattern that defines the AI Communications era. Technology leadership is necessary. Citation infrastructure is what converts it into enterprise consideration.

The quantum pure-plays solved the hardest physics problem of the century. They have not solved the simplest communications problem of the decade: making sure the chatbox gives the right answer about who built the technology.
