Published July 27, 2026, it finds that 42% of the schools (25 of 60) require zero AI coursework, Stanford GSB offers 18 times more AI coursework than the median school, and no school teaches Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
Why did 5W build a business school benchmark?
5W AI Communications built the AI Business School Index to measure whether MBA programs prepare executives to buy, govern and compete with AI. The question started with a 5W premise: buyers now settle product decisions inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. The executives who approve AI purchases are the CMOs, CFOs and COOs, and 5W wanted to know where they are taught how AI works.
The 5W AI Business School Index 2026 is Volume 03 of the 5W research series. Volume 02, the 5W AI Higher Education Index, scored 50 universities on AI production capacity. Business education is a more distributed global market, so this volume expands the universe to 60 schools.
What did the AI Business School Index find?
The index found three numbers that define the gap between business schools: 42% require zero AI coursework, the top school offers 18 times more AI coursework than the median, and zero teach GEO.

The index also found that AI strategy courses outnumber AI implementation courses 9.5 to 1. Only Stanford GSB, Wharton and Kellogg require students to build or deploy an AI system as coursework.
Which business schools lead on AI readiness?
Stanford GSB leads the AI Business School Index with a composite score of 94.5, followed by MIT Sloan at 92.0 and Wharton at 90.5. The seven Tier I schools score 82 or higher.

Tier II runs from Tsinghua SEM (81.0) and London Business School (79.5) down to IESE (72.0). Tier III covers the remaining 41 schools, scoring from 71.5 (UCLA Anderson) to 51.5 (Schulich). Each score carries a margin of plus or minus 2.5 points at the 95% confidence level, so tier placement is more reliable than exact rank. The full 60-school ranking is on the 5W index page.
Why does the ranking matter to employers?
Employers inherit whatever AI fluency an MBA program does or does not teach. A graduate from a school with no required AI course arrives without tested experience evaluating an AI vendor, managing an AI workflow or governing a model.
The index measures one variable: AI readiness. It does not score teaching quality, admissions selectivity, tuition or return on investment, so read it alongside the rankings built for those questions. The sixth dimension, AI Citation Share, comes from 3,000 prompt runs across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

How much time do business schools have to respond?
Business schools have about two admission cycles before AI readiness becomes as consequential as finance or accounting, according to the 5W AI Business School Index. The schools that restructure their required curriculum now will graduate the executives who lead AI programs. The schools that wait will graduate executives who report to them.
