Citizens Bank will pay $171,000 to win the answer. The answer runs on inputs Citizens has no one to own.
Citizens Bank is hiring an Answer Engine Optimization Manager. Base pay up to $171,000. The role owns how Citizens shows up inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It sits in a Center of Excellence. It names Brandlight and SparkToro as tools. It is real.
Amazon Web Services is hiring the same role in New York. Home Depot in Atlanta. Palo Alto Networks at director level in Santa Clara. Texas Instruments in Dallas. JPMorgan Chase in Columbus. Capital One is hiring engineers to invent LLM optimization techniques. FirstKey Homes, OneMain Financial, J.Jill, Appian, Metagenics, DTO Law — all posted. Indeed has 883 GEO listings. ZipRecruiter has over a thousand AEO listings. Salary bands run $60,000 to $200,000-plus.
I published the full list on Everything-PR this morning. Every named employer. Every salary band. Every tool the postings name. Read it. It is the clearest labor-market signal the communications industry has had this decade.
And it is a mistake.
Not the salary. The title.
The Fortune 500 is hiring the wrapper. Not the sources.
The AI engines do not invent answers. They cite them. LinkedIn is the number one most-cited domain for professional queries. Wikipedia and Reddit sit at the top of the stack for consumer and general queries. Every AEO Manager at Citizens, AWS, Home Depot, and JPMorgan is going to sit down on day one, open a Profound dashboard, and watch their brand lose the answer to a competitor whose Wikipedia entry is better sourced, whose Reddit threads are older and more upvoted, whose executives have LinkedIn posts the engines can index inside an hour.
That AEO Manager can buy Brandlight. Can run daily prompt monitoring across five engines. Can build a beautiful weekly report. Cannot move the answer. Because the inputs sit outside the org chart.
The org chart question nobody can answer.
First day on the job. New AEO Manager at Citizens Bank. Questions:
Who owns our Wikipedia entry?
Who watches our Reddit threads?
Who talks to the moderators?
Who fixes the Wikidata that feeds Google Knowledge Panels?
Who has a relationship with the twenty publications the engines actually cite in our category?
The answer at every Fortune 500 company today is nobody. The AEO Manager inherits a discipline built entirely on inputs the company has zero infrastructure to influence.
The arbitrage the Fortune 500 has not priced yet.
Wikipedia editing on Freelancer sits at $21 an hour. Reddit growth work runs $21 to $79 an hour. That is the going rate for the two most-cited inputs into the answers a $171,000 AEO Manager is being hired to influence.
Those rates do not survive contact with a Fortune 500 marketing budget once somebody in that budget cycle realizes those are the inputs that decide whether the dashboard moves. The wrapper is capitalized. The sources are gig work. That gap closes.
What communications firms should do about it.
The pitch to the client changes.
A year ago it was: you need Generative Engine Optimization. Buy this from us.
Today it is: your director-level hire cannot influence the answer without owning the sources the answer is built from. We do the sources side at scale — ethically, disclosed, inside a governed engagement. Your in-house AEO Manager runs the dashboard. We move the inputs.
That is where the next wave of enterprise budget goes. Not into more dashboards. Into the source layer the dashboards depend on.
At 5W AI Communications, that is what we are building.
The title that has not been posted yet.
The first Fortune 500 posting for a Director of AI Source Strategy — owning Wikipedia, Reddit, Wikidata, and publisher relationships as a single portfolio — lands in the next twelve to eighteen months. Somebody at Citizens or AWS or Home Depot will figure out their AEO Manager cannot move the answer without owning the inputs. The org chart catches up.
When that title appears, the category is finished forming.
Until then, the labor market is telling communications firms exactly where the money is going. Read it accordingly.
