Ask ChatGPT which U.S. sportsbook has the strongest responsible gambling program. It names BetMGM in 78% of responses. It names DraftKings in 64%. It names FanDuel — the market leader by revenue — meaningfully less. Six other major operators appear in fewer than 20% of responses. That is not a Google ranking problem. That is a discovery-layer restructuring, and it is the finding operators should be reading first inside the 5W Responsible Gambling Communications Audit 2026.

More than a third of U.S. consumers now begin product research with AI, not Google. Inside the gambling category — where the questions are urgent, specific, and skewed toward parents, students, regulators, and ESG analysts — the share is higher. The AI answer is the shelf. The operators cited in it win. The operators missing from it are being screened out of the buying decision without ever knowing it happened.

Two leaderboards that no longer match

The paid-media leaderboard in U.S. sports betting is public. FanDuel leads GGR at approximately 44%. DraftKings holds approximately 34%. BetMGM holds approximately 14%. Caesars Sportsbook, ESPN Bet, Hard Rock Bet, Fanatics Sportsbook, and BetRivers split the rest. Celebrity endorsement spend maps roughly to that same leaderboard. The category spent $520 million on celebrity and athlete partnerships in 2025.

The AI citation leaderboard for responsible gambling looks different. BetMGM at 78% citation share. DraftKings at 64%. FanDuel meaningfully behind. Caesars mid-band. ESPN Bet, Fanatics, bet365, and Stake.us under 20%. The operator spending the most on television and celebrities is not the operator AI cites for responsibility. That gap does not close with more media. That gap widens with more media, because the AI engines are reading a different signal.

What AI engines actually retrieve

The AI engines do not rank operators by paid spend. They retrieve based on what has been written, indexed, and structured about them — as EPR mapped in June. The retrievable signal for responsibility runs across four sources.

One: owned-media responsibility content. BetMGM built the GameSense partnership content library over a decade — indexed, entity-rich, cross-linked to state resources and public-health authorities. That library is retrievable. It gets pulled when a user asks about responsible gambling. DraftKings built a similar structured stack around its 2024 responsibility push. FanDuel built Play Well — but launched it later and structured it thinner. Caesars runs Play Responsibly, but the content depth is not comparable.

Two: earned media. Not press releases — indexed news coverage on third-party sites the AI engines already trust. When Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and NCAA President Charlie Baker launched the Youth Coalition on Sports Betting, the operators with executive spokespeople on the record got quoted in Boston Globe, Reuters, ESPN, and Bloomberg coverage. That coverage is now retrievable. The operators without them got scored — and they got scored in the AI answer layer, too.

Three: Reddit. r/sportsbook, r/gambling, and r/problemgambling rank operators every day. Since the OpenAI–Reddit indexing deal in May 2024, Reddit content is a direct citation source inside ChatGPT and, through the answer-engine ecosystem, effectively across the frontier models. The operators who have earned Reddit credibility — through customer service response times, cash-out reliability, dispute resolution — win the AI citation. The operators who fought Reddit lose it. That is the Reddit gambling citation layer EPR mapped in June.

Four: authoritative third-party domains. NCPG.org, ROGA, state gaming commission .gov sites, Wikipedia, academic responsibility research. The operators that appear inside those domains — cited, partnered, funded, referenced — inherit the domain's citation weight. The operators that do not, do not.

The prompts that actually run

The category-shaping queries are not "best sportsbook." The category-shaping queries are the ones with a specific audience and a specific stake. "Which sportsbook has the best responsible gambling tools." "Which sportsbook is safest for a college student." "Which sportsbook lets me set deposit limits." "Which sportsbook honored a self-exclusion request." "Which US operator has the strongest problem gambling program." Those are the queries a parent, a student, a regulator, and an ESG analyst all run — and they return the same short list of operators. Every time. That list becomes the shortlist.

Precedent — this already happened in two categories

Beauty restructured first. Ask ChatGPT for a retinol recommendation. The answer is not the brand spending most on Sephora endcaps. The answer is the brand cited inside Byrdie, Allure, Into The Gloss, and dermatology-adjacent Reddit. Travel restructured next. Ask ChatGPT for a Tokyo hotel recommendation. The answer is not the loyalty program with the biggest ad budget. The answer is the property cited inside Condé Nast Traveler, The Points Guy, and r/TravelHacks. Gambling is next — and the 5W audit is the first sector-wide measurement of the shift as it happens.

The Pre-Legalization Penalty

The audit surfaces a second finding operators should read carefully. In Michigan, Ohio, and North Carolina, operators that published responsibility content in-market before legalization achieved measurably faster regulatory approval than operators that entered cold. The mechanism: state regulators — the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission — read pre-legal responsibility content as evidence of operational intent. So do the AI engines. The operator publishing responsibility content in a pre-legal market builds a citation footprint that is retrievable on legalization day.

California is next. Texas is next. Florida is expanding the tribal compact scope. Georgia has referendum activity every cycle. Missouri passed sports betting in November 2024. Minnesota is close. The operators publishing responsibility content in those markets now are building AI shelf they will need in 12 to 36 months. The operators waiting to see how the legal fight ends are already losing the shelf.

Four operator moves, in order

One: publish responsibility content in every legal market and every pre-legal market. Not campaign microsites — indexed, entity-rich, retrievable content the AI engines can cite. Structured schema. Named authors. Cross-linked to state resources, to NCPG, to academic research, to Wikipedia entity pages. That is Generative Engine Optimization applied to the responsibility category.

Two: earn Reddit credibility. That is a product decision, not a communications decision. Customer service response times. Dispute resolution outcomes. Cash-out speed. Self-exclusion honoring. Reddit is the audit trail. The AI engines read Reddit. Reddit is downstream of product quality — and product quality is upstream of AI citation share.

Three: build executive visibility on responsibility outside crisis windows. When the Youth Coalition on Sports Betting launched, the operators with executive spokespeople already engaged got quoted. The operators without them got scored. Every subsequent AI query on youth sports betting retrieved that coverage. That gap is now permanent unless the missing operators create counter-signal — through executive commentary, through congressional testimony, through op-eds, through named research.

Four: disclose responsible gambling investment as a percentage of marketing spend in the next 10-Q. Four of 12 publicly traded U.S. operators do this. Eight do not. Disclosure is now a Sustainalytics and MSCI signal, an ISS signal, and — because the AI engines index ESG filings — an AI signal. Non-disclosure feeds three separate downgrade paths at once.

What operators should read from the leaderboard

The 5W RG Communications Index scored 30 operators. MGM Resorts at 81. BetMGM Sportsbook at 78. BetMGM Casino at 74. DraftKings at 71. FanDuel at 66. Those five built the content, the disclosure, and the executive visibility that show up inside AI answers, inside ESG scores, and inside regulator files. They are the operators the industry will study when the next legalization cycle opens.

On the other end: Las Vegas Sands at 41, ESPN Bet at 38, Fanatics Sportsbook at 34, bet365 at 29, Stake.us at 22. Those operators are running acquisition without the corresponding responsibility infrastructure. In the AI answer layer, they are invisible on responsibility queries. In the ESG layer, they are compounding a controversy. In the state regulator layer, they are missing evidence of operational intent.

The structural shift

The category built acquisition at scale. It did not build authority at scale. The AI answer engines are now the authority layer — and the operators cited inside them will inherit the category's next decade of buyer trust. The operators outside will not.

AI Communications is a mix of journalism, psychology, and engineering. The engineering piece — indexed content, structured entities, retrievable schema, cross-domain citation — is the piece the leaderboard rewards. That is what BetMGM built. That is what DraftKings caught up on. That is what the operators under 40 have to construct now, before Q4 2026 earnings, before the Sustainalytics refresh, before the MSCI cycle, before the California sports betting debate reopens.

More than a third of U.S. buyers begin research with AI, not Google. In gambling, that share is higher. The 5W Responsible Gambling Communications Audit is the map of who is being cited and who is not. The operators who read it as a marketing memo will still be running the same television spots in six months. The operators who read it as a distribution restructuring will own the AI shelf when the next state legalizes.

Start responsible-gambling research with AI, not Google. The answers are already being written.
