AI Visibility is the measurable discipline of tracking how often, and where, a brand shows up in AI-generated answers. Citations, name-checks, linked sources — across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Grok, and Perplexity — when someone asks a question in your category.

A decade of SEO measured rank on ten blue links. AI Visibility measures something narrower and newer: whether the machine’s paragraph mentions you at all, and which of your pages it pulled from.

I track this for my own firm’s site the same way I track anything else I sell. Below is the actual data. Eighteen days. Pulled from Ahrefs. Nothing rounded to make a better story.

The Eighteen-Day Snapshot

On July 3, 2026, I pulled a citation baseline for ronntorossian.com across seven AI platforms. On July 21, I pulled it again. No new AI-specific content shipped between the two pulls. The site kept doing what it was already doing.

| Platform | Jul 3, 2026 | Jul 21, 2026 | Change |

|---|---|---|---|

| ChatGPT | 0 | 9 (2 pages) | New |

| Gemini | 0 | 1 | New |

| Google AI Mode | 1 | 2 | +1 |

| Grok | 3 | 3 | Flat |

| Copilot | 1 | 1 | Flat |

| Perplexity | 0 | 0 | Zero — gap |

| Google AI Overviews | 0 | 0 | Zero — biggest gap |

Three things stand out.

ChatGPT went from zero to nine, spread across two pages, without a dedicated push. That is the platform’s crawler catching up to existing content — not a campaign result. It is also the clearest evidence in the data that AI Visibility moves on its own timeline, one with little relationship to a publishing calendar.

Grok and Copilot held flat — three and one, respectively, on both dates. Flat means those platforms already surfaced what the existing footprint gives them.

Perplexity and Google AI Overviews stayed at zero on both dates. Two platforms, eighteen days, no movement. That is the finding worth acting on. Those two need their own investigation, likely their own content, and belong on a separate line item rather than folded into a blended score.

The AI Visibility Scorecard

Track it the same way every week.

1. List every platform separately. ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Grok, Perplexity. Never average them into one score. A brand with nine ChatGPT citations and zero on Perplexity has two different problems. One score buries the second one.

2. Log three numbers per platform. Citation count. Number of distinct pages cited. The query or topic that triggered the citation. Page count matters more than citation count. Nine citations on one page is a single strong asset. Nine citations across nine pages is a distributed footprint.

3. Pull the baseline before touching anything. A near-zero baseline is typical. Most brands start at zero or one across most platforms. The number earns its meaning once a second pull gives you something to compare it to.

4. Re-pull weekly for the first two months, then monthly. Early weeks show which platforms move fast and which sit still. After two months, weekly checks mostly confirm what you already know.

5. Separate lagging from active platforms. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, in this snapshot, are lagging. They tend to catch up later, once a page accumulates enough external signal. Treat a stalled lagging platform as a longer queue and revisit on a longer clock.

6. Compare citation movement against your publishing log. A platform that moves without new content means crawl and indexing caught up to old material. A platform that sits still despite new content usually means the content has not been crawled yet — or is not the kind of asset the platform cites.

This tracks a different metric than Citation Share, which measures the percentage of relevant queries where a name or brand appears in the first substantive paragraph of the answer. Citation Share is a query-level measure. AI Visibility is a platform-level count: whether you show up at all, and where.

The Traps

Averaging platforms into a single score. A blended number hides Perplexity at zero while ChatGPT climbs toward double digits. Report each platform on its own line.

Treating zero as failure. A zero baseline on Perplexity and Google AI Overviews after eighteen days means those two platforms are still catching up. Five other platforms in the same snapshot already carry a citation footprint for the same site.

Crediting content that had nothing to do with the movement. The nine new ChatGPT citations arrived before any dedicated AI-visibility content shipped. Attributing that jump to a campaign that did not yet exist produces the wrong lesson for next quarter.

Measuring once and calling it a program. One pull is a photograph. AI Visibility is the discipline of taking the same photograph on a schedule and reading the difference between frames.

Ignoring which pages get cited. Two platforms citing the same two pages nine times tells you those two pages carry the authority. Build the next round of content around what already works — not around a guess.

FAQ

What is AI Visibility? The measurable presence of a brand in AI-generated answers: how often it gets cited, on which platform, from which pages — tracked across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Grok, and Perplexity.

How is AI Visibility different from Citation Share? AI Visibility counts citations per platform — a page-and-count measure. Citation Share measures the percentage of specific queries where a brand appears in the first substantive paragraph — a query-level measure. Both matter. They answer different questions.

How often should a brand check its AI Visibility? Weekly for the first two months, to see which platforms move and which sit still. Monthly after that, unless a launch or major coverage warrants a closer look.
