Control Is The Only Dimension You Can Move

The [5W Reputation Index](https://www.5wpr.com/research/) measures named principals across five dimensions — Accuracy, Sentiment, Completeness, Consistency, Control. Across more than 250 named principals scored across nine cohorts, one finding recurs more reliably than any of the others.
**Control is the only dimension a principal can directly move.** The other four describe what the engines retrieve. Control describes what the principal authored. The other four are diagnostic. Control is upstream.
## What Control measures
Control measures the share of the engine's portrait of the principal that comes from primary-source material the principal authored themselves. Books. Foundation reporting. Annual letters. Sustained owned publishing. Wikipedia accuracy. Structured authority across the principal's owned-property graph.
Accuracy reflects whether the engine has the facts right given the source corpus. Sentiment reflects the affective tone of the corpus. Completeness reflects breadth. Consistency reflects cross-engine convergence. **All four downstream dimensions move when Control moves.**
## The dispersion across cohorts
Across the nine Reputation Index cohorts, the dispersion on Control is severe.
**Top-quartile principals score above 65.** Arthur Blank at 78 (Blank Family Foundation, Home Depot legacy, sustained Atlanta business community presence built across decades). James Simons posthumously at 80 (books written about him, Simons Foundation, sustained mathematical-research narrative). Seth Klarman at 72 ("Margin of Safety" from 1991 still anchors his portrait). Ray Dalio at 68 ("Principles" series, Bridgewater institutional publishing, sustained interview presence). Stanley Druckenmiller at 65.
**Bottom-quartile principals score at or near zero.** Joel Glazer at 0 (no public-facing primary-source surface). Bill Hwang at 0 (no Control surface remaining after the Archegos collapse). Stephen Ross at 12. David Tepper at 16. Crispin Odey at 14. Paul Singer at 12.
The dispersion is structural, not random. The principals at the top built primary-source corpora across decades. The principals at the bottom either did not build them or built them and watched them be displaced by anchor events the corpora were never adequate to compete with.
## What moves Control durably
Five primary-source categories. Each appears at the top of the dimensional scoring across cohorts.
**Books move Control most durably.** Klarman 1991. Dalio's "Principles." Schwarzman's "What It Takes." Rubenstein's "How to Lead." The book is the single most durable primary-source artifact a principal can produce. The compound continues for decades.
**Foundation reporting moves Control durably.** The Blank Family Foundation operates substantial annual reporting infrastructure that compounds across each fiscal year. IRS Form 990 filings, named-program coverage, multi-generational continuity.
**Annual letters move Control durably.** Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway annual letter is the gold standard. Howard Marks's Oaktree memos. Ray Dalio's letters. The compound is annual and engine-weighted.
**Owned publishing moves Control with discipline.** Substack, executive blogs, LinkedIn essays, podcast appearances with transcripts. Buildable on shorter cycles than books or foundations but requires sustained consistency.
**Wikipedia accuracy and structured authority move Control technically.** Schema markup. Named-entity pages. Sustained owned-property cadence.
**What does not move Control**
**Press releases do not move Control.** The engines do not weight press releases as primary-source authoritative material from the principal.
**Paid media does not move Control.** Advertising spend does not appear in the engines' Control assessment.
**News-cycle coverage does not move Control durably.** Coverage produced about the principal — rather than by the principal — moves Sentiment briefly without moving Control.
## Where this sits in the broader research
Control is the buildable response to the Anchor Event Era framing. Anchor events compress the four downstream dimensions and dominate the engine portrait. Control investment produces competing primary-source material the engines retrieve as authoritative. The portrait rebalances accordingly, on multi-year timescales.
The Trust Map findings on consumer brands, the Defense Index findings on regulated providers, the Wealth Migration findings on brand portability — each domain produces the same buildable-response conclusion. The unit of work is Control. The compound is durable. The timescale is multi-year.
## The multi-year action plan
**Year One: produce.** The most durable Control-moving artifact available to the principal. A book where the principal can write one. A foundation with proper reporting infrastructure where applicable. A sustained owned-publishing cadence where neither of those apply. The form matters less than the consistency of the production.
**Year Two: compound.** Continue what worked in Year One. Add structured authority across owned properties. Audit the Wikipedia entry. Build named-entity disambiguation across canonical references.
**Year Three: measure.** Re-run the Reputation Index baseline. The Control dimension should be measurably higher. The Completeness dimension should follow. The Sentiment dimension should follow. The Consistency dimension should follow.
## Closing
Control is upstream of every other dimension of engine-rendered reputation. The principals who understand this and invest in Control move their entire engine portrait across the next decade.
