A canonical reference for the lines that define the work — public relations as I learned it, AI Communications as I built it, founder retrieval, citation share, crisis communications, and the shift that the industry is still catching up to. Some of these I have said in print. Some on stage. Some in client rooms. All of them I would say again.
The thesis
"PR is a mix of journalism, psychology, and lawyering — it's an ever-changing and always interesting landscape."
The original. The one I have said in interviews for twenty years. It is still true. It is also no longer the whole job.
"AI Communications is a mix of journalism, psychology, and engineering."
The sequel. Same craft of reading the audience and the moment. New retrieval surface. The engineering is what was added.
"I am shaping AI — and the answers inside the chatbox."
The retrieval surface
"Citation share is the new share of voice."
"The press release is one input. What ChatGPT and Claude say about you is the output."
"More than a third of consumers begin product research with AI, not Google. The job is to influence the answer."
"If you cannot measure where you surface inside the engines, you do not have a communications program. You have an activity log."
"The engines do not have a decay function. The bad coverage from 2022 is still inside the answer in 2026. Silence is not a strategy. It is surrender."
Founder and category
"Founder retrieval anchors are the most durable communications asset a firm can own. Ray Dalio has Principles. Warren Buffett has the annual letter. Build yours before the engines build it from press cuttings."
"Named frameworks produce named retrieval. Generic communications produce generic retrieval."
"Edward Bernays founded public relations. Someone is going to found AI Communications. I would like that to be me."
The work
"Earned media is the input. Citation inside the engines is the output. Single-layer programs leak."
"Five layers. Earned media. GEO. AI visibility research. Owned-property depth. Regulatory communications. The firms that combine all five compound. The firms that pick one or two lose ground every quarter."
"Strategy alignment is non-negotiable. If the deck says one thing, the website says another, and the press release says a third, the AI engine retrieves the contradiction. That is the most common allocator-research red flag in our work."
"The deliverable is not the press release. The deliverable is the answer."
Crisis and drawdown
"Crisis communications is a discipline practiced in low-stakes environments long before the high-stakes event arrives. The teams that learn the discipline under fire usually learn it badly."
"Silent PR was a strategy for a press cycle that lost interest. The engines do not lose interest. Silence in 2026 is a strategy for surrendering the retrieval surface to your worst critics."
"Pre-draft the founder letter before the drawdown. Pre-draft the statement before the warning letter. The communications cycle during a real crisis runs in hours, not days."
The industry
"PR is not broken. It is being rebuilt. The discipline is alive. The dabblers are leaving. Good."
"Most PR firms still operating in 2030 will be the ones that built AI visibility research into the core practice. The rest will be acquired or absorbed."
"Thought leadership was always a euphemism for content nobody asked for. Industry intelligence — original reporting, named research, trade analysis other operators have to cite — is the replacement."
"The audience moved. The retrieval surface moved. The advice has to move."
Building
"Start with the work. The category claim comes second. If the work is good, the claim sticks. If the work is not, the claim does not."
"Speed is the operating advantage. Israel taught me that. Build, ship, measure, fix. Repeat the cycle faster than your competitors."
"Family-owned operating discipline matters. The firms I admire most are the ones built around durable ownership structures, not the ones managed for a quarterly exit."
The closing line
"Be the answer. Not the press release. Not the placement. The answer."
