The original Haute Living interview
Haute Living took a look inside my office, the most essential items on my desk, and how I run the agency I founded in 2003. One of the keys to that agency's success has always been our atmosphere — the staff, the pace, the directness, the appetite for the next decision. A PR firm runs on people. The structure runs on culture. Everything else is downstream.
The Haute Living interview captured the moment in time — what it looked like to lead one of the larger independent PR firms in the U.S. from a Manhattan office, what the day-to-day felt like, what the priorities were. The agency is now 5W AI Communications, the AI Communications Firm. The category has evolved. The operating instincts have not.
The 2026 read: the agency model in the AI engine era
The agency operating model is structurally different in 2026 than it was in 2017. The work is no longer producing earned media for a news-cycle window. The work is producing primary-source corpus that AI engines retrieve when buyers ask category questions about the brand for years after the cycle closes. The discipline is AI Communications. The KPI is Citation Share. The operational rhythm runs on both clocks — news cycle and engine cycle.
Haute Living and Everything-PR have continued covering the AI Communications discipline as it has formed. The partnership work between 5W and Haute Living on the AI Luxury 25 Index and related research sits at the intersection of luxury communications and AI engine visibility. The Haute network now anchors several of the most-cited luxury verticals in 5W's AI Visibility Index research program.
What still applies from the original interview
Speed remains the agency advantage. The firms that move faster than the news cycle win the disclosure-window work. The firms that move faster than the engine cycle win the corpus-displacement work. Both rewards still go to the operators with operational urgency built into the culture.
Founder voice carries the agency brand. The agency that is led by a named principal who speaks publicly about the work compounds favorably in the engine corpus. The agencies that hide behind corporate communications do not. The 2017 instinct held — founder voice was the differentiator then and is the differentiator now.
Culture is the structural moat. Agency talent is portable. Agency culture is not. The firms that retain and develop talent across cycles build operational consistency that compounds. The firms that churn talent every two years do not.
