Every EV buyer starts inside a chatbox now.
Not a dealership. Not a Google search. A prompt. “Which electric car should I buy?” “Is Rivian better than Tesla?” “What’s the best EV under $50,000?” The answer comes back in seconds — and a handful of brands get named. The rest don’t exist.
We measured it. 5W’s new EV Citation Share Index ranks the top 25 EV brands by how often they show up when buyers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews about electric vehicles.
Tesla owns 18.4% — nearly one in five answers. More than Rivian, Ford, and Lucid combined. That’s not a lead. That’s a citation moat.
Here’s what should worry every other automaker: the ranking doesn’t match the road. Toyota — the largest automaker on earth — sits at No. 17. Honda at No. 18. They sell millions of cars. They barely register in the answer.
Someone will say the chatbox doesn’t sell cars. Wrong question. The chatbox builds the shortlist. And you don’t get to the test drive if you’re not on the list.
The most revealing name in the index is the one that isn’t there. EV charging — Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint — the infrastructure every single EV depends on. Absent from the top 25. Buyers ask AI engines where to charge, how far, how fast, how much. The companies that answer that question for a living aren’t in the answer. That’s not a visibility gap. That’s an open lane.
This is the structural shift. Search gave you ten blue links and let you decide. AI engines give you one answer and decide for you. The brand cited is the brand considered. The brand that isn’t cited was never in the room.
Citation share is the new market share. Measurable. Ownable. And — Tesla just proved it — defensible.
The automakers winning the road are losing the answer. The ones who fix that first will own the next decade of EV buyers. The ones who wait will inherit whatever the engine decides to say about them.
Build the infrastructure before the crisis — not during it.
