A Wall Street Journal placement is not one asset for AI engines. In financial services, ChatGPT cited WSJ 2,157 times between January 1 and November 7, 2026, Google AI Overviews cited it 889 times and Perplexity cited it 130 times. At least 78% of the ChatGPT citations point to WSJ's Buy Side commerce pages, not its newsroom.

What did the AI citation study find about WSJ?
The AI Engine Citation Gap study found that WSJ's citation counts in financial services depend almost entirely on which engine is asked. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity gave counts of 2,157, 889 and 130, and WSJ's total across all tracked engines was 3,495 earned-media citations.
The study comes from 5W's AI Engine Citation Gap study, which analyzed citation data for five categories 5W already monitors: financial services, beauty, tools and home improvement retail, smart home, and supplements. It describes those categories and is not a measure of all AI answers.
Why does Buy Side matter for a WSJ placement?
Buy Side matters because most of WSJ's ChatGPT citations in financial services point to it, and it began as a commerce site separate from the newsroom. Every WSJ page among ChatGPT's 50 most-cited finance pages sat under wsj.com/buyside. Those 22 pages account for 1,687 citations, which is at least 78% of WSJ's ChatGPT total.
Axios's launch report said in 2022 that Buy Side would have its own writers and editors, that its team would be completely separate from the newsroom, and that it launched with affiliate partners including Skimlinks, Red Ventures and Amazon. The study did not re-verify that structure, so I read it as a description of how Buy Side began.
A newsroom story and a Buy Side review are different placements. A PR team that reports a WSJ placement should say which one it earned.
Do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite the same outlets?
ChatGPT and Perplexity cite very different outlets, and in no industry did their top-three lists share more than one name. In financial services, ChatGPT's top three were WSJ, Kiplinger and Investopedia, while Perplexity's were SmartAsset, Bankrate and Kiplinger. SmartAsset had 1,229 Perplexity citations and 349 on ChatGPT.
Muck Rack's data points the same way. Muck Rack's October 2026 release reported that only 212 domains were cited by all four providers it tested in a September collection of 1,020 prompts.
Which outlet types matter in each industry?
Outlet type matters because national news and magazine brands led only in beauty, at 69% of citations to the listed domains. Review and niche sites took the largest share in finance, tools and smart home, and institutions were the largest named source type in supplements.
| Industry | News or magazine brands | Review or niche sites |
|---|---|---|
| Financial services | 22% | 53% |
| Beauty | 69% | 4% |
| Tools and retail | 14% | 57% |
| Smart home | 8% | 42% |
| Supplements | 2% | 40% |
Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools, January 1 to November 7, 2026. Outlet types are 5W analyst judgment, except WSJ Buy Side, which was checked page by page. Other types, such as specialist publications and WSJ Buy Side, make up the remainder.
Institutions made up 38.9% of supplements citations, with nih.gov and fda.gov among the most-cited domains. A beauty brand should keep building national and magazine relationships, while a finance, tools or smart home brand should add review and specialist outlets to the same pitching discipline.
What should PR teams conclude from the data?
PR teams should plan placements engine by engine, industry by industry and page by page. I would start with four steps.
- Measure each engine on its own, since a blended score hides the gap between ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Track the exact page that gets cited, not only the outlet.
- Match outlet type to the industry, adding review and specialist outlets in finance, tools and smart home.
- Repeat the check on a schedule, because Muck Rack reported journalism's share of AI citations falling from about 27% to 22% between May and October 2026.
For a broader view, see how I measure AI visibility on my own site and the AI visibility research library. The study was published by 5W, the PR, creative and AI Visibility agency that I founded.
What does the study not show?
The study does not show that a citation causes a brand recommendation, and it covers only five existing categories. Gemini returned no citation data, outlet types are analyst judgment, and the Buy Side description rests on 2022 launch reporting. Earned media was between 13% and 40% of citations in these categories, so it is one input among several.
Frequently asked questions
How many times did ChatGPT cite WSJ in financial services?
ChatGPT cited WSJ 2,157 times in financial services between January 1 and November 7, 2026. Google AI Overviews cited it 889 times and Perplexity 130 times.
Are WSJ's ChatGPT citations from its newsroom?
At least 78% of them point to wsj.com/buyside pages. At its 2022 launch, Buy Side was described as a commerce site with its own editorial team, separate from the newsroom.
Do all AI engines cite the same news outlets?
No. The ChatGPT and Perplexity top-three lists shared at most one outlet in every industry the study covered.
Does a citation mean AI recommends a brand?
No. The study counts citations and does not test whether a cited article discusses the brand an engine recommends.
