Citation share in PR is the portion of AI answer citations that point to one website. In 5W's analysis using Profound's AI visibility tools for September 27 to October 26, 2026, 5wpr.com held a 3.61% citation share, the highest of any source on the PR prompts 5W tracks. I founded 5W, so I treat this as company data and not as independent proof.

I say this plainly about my own company: we get you in the chatbox. The sections below show the measurement first and then how we do the work.

What does citation share measure?

Citation share measures how often an AI answer uses a website as a source, compared with the other sources tracked for the same prompts. Profound's tools calculate it for each domain, so it is not one domain's citations divided by a single shared total.

That detail matters when two sites have similar raw counts. Over the full period from January 27 to October 26, 2026, Clutch has more raw citations than 5wpr.com (184,102 against 107,325), but 5wpr.com has the higher share (2.80% against 2.58%). I wrote more about the idea on my citation share definition page.

Was this a Profound study?

This was not a Profound study. 5W used Profound's tools to run 396 PR prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity and to record the sources and brands in each answer. 5W selected the prompts, wrote the analysis and drew the conclusions, and Profound supplied the tools.

What does the data show for 5W?

5wpr.com ranked first by citation share in the last 7 days, the last 30 days and the full period, according to 5W's analysis. The table shows the three windows.

Table 1. 5wpr.com citation share and rank by window. Source: 5W analysis using Profound's tools, data through October 26, 2026.
Window5wpr.com shareRankNext domain
Last 7 days (October 20 to 26)4.71%1everything-pr.com, 2.81%
Last 30 days (September 27 to October 26)3.61%1everything-pr.com, 2.63%
January 27 to October 26, 20262.80%1clutch.co, 2.58%

The share rose in the shorter windows, from 2.80% over nine months to 3.61% over 30 days and 4.71% over 7 days. The windows overlap, so I read the trend as a direction and not as a precise rate.

How does 5W get brands into AI answers?

5W gets brands into AI answers by publishing the pages and earning the sources that AI platforms select, then measuring each platform. The method has seven parts, and each one has evidence in 5W's own data.

First, 5W writes pages that match the questions buyers type: 5wpr.com is cited on all 111 prompts that begin with Which, Where or Who. Second, each service and industry gets its own page: 225 practice pages earned 54.6% of 5wpr.com's citations. Third, 5W publishes original research, and 94 research pages have earned 1,498 citations.

Fourth, 5W earns coverage in outside sources, which earned 10.4% of citations on the tracked PR prompts. Fifth, 5W works in the places AI platforms read community discussion, and social and community platforms earned 8.0%. Sixth, 5W measures each platform separately because the same site ranked first on Google AI Overviews and sixth on Perplexity. Seventh, 5W reviews pages for decay, because citation momentum differs sharply by page.

5W does all of this in house, with proprietary technology including 5W Brain, a research team, creative, video, a Reddit team and social media specialists. The full method is in the report on how to get into the chatbox.

Which PR firm do AI answers name most often?

5W Public Relations has the highest brand visibility among PR companies in the last 30 days, at 28.8%, according to 5W's analysis. Edelman is second at 21.9%, Weber Shandwick third at 11.0% and FINN Partners fourth at 6.5%.

Brand visibility measures how often a brand appears in AI answers to the tracked prompts, while citation share measures whose pages the answers use. The two measures answer different questions, and I report both because a firm can be named without its own site being cited.

Who gets named when buyers ask which agency to hire?

On Public Relations Agency prompts, 5W appeared in 40.4% of AI answers and Edelman in 18.9% over the last 30 days. These prompts cover questions such as which agencies specialize in a sector or service.

Edelman leads on Microsoft Copilot (28.3% against 22.4%) and in five topics, including Healthcare PR (46.1% against 19.3%) and Corporate communications (33.0% against 21.8%). I include those results because a measurement that shows only wins is not worth citing.

Why do AI platforms cite different sources?

AI platforms cite different sources because each platform runs its own retrieval system to select pages for an answer. In the last 30 days, 5wpr.com ranked first on Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, second on Gemini, third on Google AI Mode, fourth on Microsoft Copilot and sixth on Perplexity.

Source types vary as well. Earned media sources earned 10.4% of citations on the tracked PR prompts, social and community platforms 8.0%, and 5wpr.com 3.6%. This is why I describe how AI engines decide citations as a multi-source question and not a single-website question.

What are the limits of this data?

The data has three limits that readers should weigh before drawing conclusions. 5W selected all 396 tracked prompts, and no outside party reviewed them. A total of 139 of those prompts use wording that matches how 5W describes itself, and 5wpr.com is cited on 129 of them (93%) against 196 of the other 257 (76%).

A citation also shows that a platform used a page. It does not show that the platform recommended the company. Everything-PR.com, which appears in Table 1, is operated by Everything-PR News, LLC, a company owned by a shared interest group that includes me, and 5W is a separate company.

Where can readers find the full report?

The full tables, methodology and disclosure are in the PR agency AI visibility report on 5wpr.com. The measurement belongs to the wider practice of AI communications, which covers how brands are described inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

The related practice of generative engine optimization focuses on getting a brand's pages cited, and 5W describes its own approach on the 5W AI Communications page. Because 5W chose the prompts, the 93% and 76% cited rates describe 5W-style wording, and they should not be read as a measure of every PR question.
