Your Vet Doesn't Exist Inside ChatGPT

_Three Mars Petcare brands now control nearly a third of every veterinary citation surfaced by [ChatGPT](https://chat.openai.com/), [Claude](https://claude.ai/), [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/), and [Google AI Overviews](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/). Eighty percent of independent practices are invisible. This is what AI Communications looks like when it goes wrong._
The vet who treated my friend's dog for fifteen years does not exist.
Not in person. The clinic is still on the block. The waiting room still smells like wet retriever. The same woman runs the front desk.
But ask [ChatGPT](https://chat.openai.com/) for a vet in the neighborhood and her name does not appear. Ask [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/). Ask [Claude](https://claude.ai/). Ask Google's AI Overview. She is not there.
She is not there because new research from [5W Research](https://www.5wpr.com/research/) — the [Veterinary AI Visibility Index 2026](https://www.5wpr.com/ai-visibility-index/veterinary-ai-visibility-index-2026/) — measured 65+ consumer-intent prompts across four major answer engines in Q1 2026 and found that [Mars Petcare](https://www.mars.com/made-by-mars/petcare) controls 27% to 30% of every veterinary citation in the country.
**Banfield Pet Hospital**: 11.5%. **VCA Animal Hospitals**: 10%. **BluePearl**: 6%. Three brands. One owner. Almost a third of the answers.
Eighty percent of independent U.S. veterinary practices have zero AI citation share in their own metro.
Zero. In their own neighborhood.
## This is a structural shift, not a marketing problem
More than a third of consumers begin product research with AI now — not Google. Pet owners looking for a vet are no different. The chatbox is the new checkout. The answer engine is the new Yellow Pages.
When the answer engine never names you, you do not get the visit. You do not get the relationship. You do not get the lifetime value of a household that buys flea medication, dental cleanings, and end-of-life care for two decades.
You disappear — slowly, then all at once.
## Mars built the infrastructure. The independents did not.
Mars Petcare runs three brands against three different consumer intents. [Banfield](https://www.banfield.com/) catches general practice and the [PetSmart](https://www.petsmart.com/) co-location traffic. [VCA](https://vcahospitals.com/) catches mid-tier and specialty. [BluePearl](https://bluepearlvet.com/) catches emergency and oncology.
Shared digital infrastructure underneath. Distinct entity signals on the surface. Three citations per prompt instead of one.
More than 40 corporate veterinary groups now operate in the United States, backed by Mars and by private equity. They consolidated faster than nearly any other healthcare-adjacent category. They consolidated because the unit economics are excellent and because they understood — earlier than the independents — that scale wins the answer engine.
## What I tell every practice owner who calls
There are exactly three plays for an independent practice that wants to exist five years from now.
**One. Become the cited authority on a specialty.** Pet oncology. Avian medicine. Working-dog orthopedics. Pick a clinical area and become the source the AI engines pull from. Depth beats footprint.
**Two. Join a regional association that pools digital infrastructure.** Shared schema, shared review programs, shared content. Independents do not have to fight the citation war alone.
**Three. Sell.** To Mars. To one of the 40 corporate groups. The visibility gap is accelerating. The window on a premium valuation closes every quarter.
Nostalgia is not a strategy. The corner clinic is not coming back unless the corner clinic gets cited by the machine.
## The bigger pattern
Veterinary is the warning shot. The same dynamic is unfolding in legal services, in dermatology, in financial advice, in home services, in every category where a local independent used to win on relationship.
AI Communications is a mix of journalism, psychology, and engineering. Citation share is the new market share. The work is to influence the answer.
Start product research with AI, not Google. So does every pet owner in America. Behave accordingly.
