Today I published six AI Citation Share scorecards on Everything-PR. Eighteen of the world's largest consumer brands. 4,500 individual audits across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. 300 named test prompts published inline. One conclusion.

The brands buyers know are not always the brands the chatbox names.

The data is brutal. CoverGirl — owned by Coty — is correctly attributed to its parent by only 2 of 5 engines. Four Seasons shows up on every luxury hotel query in any global city, but only 2 of 5 engines name Bill Gates' Cascade Investment as the owner. Warner Bros. Discovery ran a naming-churn cycle from HBO Max to Max back to HBO Max — and paid roughly five points of citation share for it. Sony — the conglomerate behind PlayStation, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, Sony Financial Services — scored 66. Apple scored 89. Two companies. One owns its category answer. The other doesn't.

This is the new playing field.

Inside a Google results page, ten blue links compete for attention. Inside a ChatGPT answer, three brands get named. Everyone else is invisible. Citation share is the new market share — and most brands have never measured theirs.

Consumer behavior already moved. OpenAI has disclosed weekly active users above 700 million. Perplexity is in the double-digit millions. Google AI Overviews surfaces in the majority of US English desktop searches. Anthropic's own AI Usage Index documents billions of weekly AI engine interactions. The chatbox is the new front door to buyer research — and the brand-side response is still catching up.

Why I built this.

I founded 5W in 2003. I've worked through every platform shift since — search, social, content, influencer, every wave. This one is different. This one rewrites how buyers research everything from skincare to streaming, from steakhouses to semiconductors. Citation share is the structural variable that decides who shows up in the answer and who gets skipped. No one was grading it. So I built the grade.

The EPR GEO Scorecard is quarterly. Reproducible. Auditable — every prompt published inline. Six volumes in the pilot wave covering Beauty, Hotels, Luxury, Streaming, QSR, and Consumer Tech. Eighteen brands graded. The next six waves cover airlines, CPG, sports leagues, fintech, real estate, EV, gaming, crypto exchanges, universities.

The discipline.

AI Communications is a mix of journalism, psychology, and engineering — and the audience is now the machine.

The work belongs to a discipline called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). The Scorecard measures outcomes. GEO produces them. Wikipedia anchoring. Schema reinforcement. English-language press cadence. Crawler policy. Category-comparison content seeding. The mechanics are knowable. The work is doable. The clock is running.

Two questions every brand should be asking right now.

  1. When the chatbox names brands in our category, are we one of them?
  2. If not — what's the gap, and what closes it?

The EPR GEO Scorecard answers the first. The work answers the second. The window to lock the category answer is open right now.
