A six month healthcare PR retainer costs roughly $30,000 to $90,000 at the $5,000 to $15,000 a month range DesignRush reports for agency retainers, and more at the premium tier it assigns to healthcare. Distribution, media databases, content production and expense markups are often billed on top. Compare quotes by scope and staffing, not by the monthly number alone.

How much does a six month healthcare PR retainer cost?

A six month healthcare PR retainer costs six times the monthly fee, and published benchmarks put typical agency retainers at $5,000 to $15,000 a month. DesignRush, a marketing directory, reported those figures in its 2026 PR pricing guide, last updated in March 2026. The same guide places healthcare in its high-cost industry tier, at $150 to $400 an hour and a budget range of $25,000 or more, because regulated sectors need greater expertise.

$5,000$30,000Low end of DesignRush's typical agency retainer
$10,000$60,000Middle of that range
$15,000$90,000High end of that range
$25,000$150,000Premium tier DesignRush lists for healthcare, if the figure is monthly

DesignRush does not label the period for the $25,000 healthcare figure, so treat the last row as a planning assumption and confirm the period when you request quotes. The other totals are simple multiplication of the monthly range.

In the United Kingdom, Whito, an independent research publisher, reported in June 2026 that consistent proactive PR commonly runs £3,000 to £8,000 a month, and £8,000 to £15,000 for established mid-market agencies. Over six months that is £18,000 to £48,000 and £48,000 to £90,000 by the same arithmetic.

Why does healthcare PR cost more than other sectors?

Healthcare PR costs more than most sectors because regulated claims need senior review and several audiences need separate messages. DesignRush says highly regulated or specialized sectors typically require greater expertise and incur premium rates, since credibility and compliance are critical.

In practice, three things add senior time. Claims about outcomes or products need review before they are published, so each announcement takes longer to clear. A single launch may need different messages for patients, clinicians, payers and investors. And a health crisis, such as a safety report, can require fast, careful work. DesignRush lists proactive crisis planning retainers at about $5,000 to $15,000 a month.

What is usually billed on top of a healthcare PR retainer?

Wire distribution, media databases, content production and expense markups are usually billed on top of a healthcare PR retainer. DesignRush advises asking for a line-item budget, because hard costs are often passed through to the client.

  • Wire distribution, which for PR Newswire starts at a base rate of $325 to $8,700 for a 400-word release, according to DesignRush citing Prezly.
  • Media databases, which DesignRush says can run $6,000 to $8,000 a year.
  • Video, design and long-form content, which DesignRush says often exceed typical PR budgets.
  • A markup on out-of-pocket costs, which DesignRush says PR firms commonly set around 17.65 percent, citing a Gould+Partners benchmarking report.

I would add one more question. Ask whether time spent on regulatory or legal coordination counts against your retainer hours, because it can consume a large share of them.

What should six months of healthcare PR deliver?

Six months of healthcare PR should deliver a positioning document, a pitched set of stories, secured coverage and a measured report against goals you set in month one. A workable split is setup in months one and two, active pitching in months three and four, and measurement and adjustment in months five and six.

DesignRush notes that PR typically takes about three to six months to show consistent results. A six month retainer is therefore the shortest term in which you can judge whether the program works, and you should write the measures into the contract before work starts.

How do you compare healthcare PR quotes?

You compare healthcare PR quotes by putting each one on the same scope: deliverables, hours, staffing, pass-through costs and the review process for regulated claims. Five questions make quotes comparable.

  1. How many hours or days a month does the retainer buy?
  2. Who works on the account, and at what seniority?
  3. Which costs are passed through, and at what markup?
  4. Who reviews regulated claims, and does that time count against the retainer?
  5. What results will be reported, and how often?

Whito makes a related point about PR generally: a retainer buys time, so the cheaper the retainer, the less actually gets done. I founded 5WPR in 2003, and its healthcare PR practice is one of the firms you can put through these five questions. Ronn Torossian is the founder and chairman of 5W. 5W's own press release cost guide, published October 6, 2026, lists the factors that move distribution and agency costs.

When is a project better than a six month retainer?

A project is better than a six month retainer when you have one defined event, such as a launch, a data release or a financing announcement. DesignRush says agencies offer fixed-fee or hourly pricing for launches, events and short campaigns, with the scope defined in advance and extras agreed in writing.

Choose a retainer when you need steady media relationships and several announcements over the year. For related reading, see my guides on choosing a healthcare PR agency in New York, the wider healthcare PR guide and press release writing cost.

What should you budget for healthcare PR?

Budget for the scope you can verify: a written deliverable list, named staff and a capped pass-through budget. If the quotes you receive are far apart, the scope is almost certainly different, so equalize the scope before you compare prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much does healthcare PR cost per month?

DesignRush reports typical agency retainers of $5,000 to $15,000 a month, with healthcare in a premium tier. Whito reports £3,000 to £8,000 a month for consistent proactive PR in the United Kingdom.

How much does a six month healthcare PR retainer cost?

At $5,000 to $15,000 a month, a six month retainer totals $30,000 to $90,000, before pass-through costs. Premium tiers cost more.

Why is healthcare PR more expensive than other PR?

What is not included in a PR retainer?

Distribution fees, media databases, content production and travel are commonly billed separately, often with a markup. Ask for a line-item budget.

How long does healthcare PR take to work?

DesignRush says PR usually takes about three to six months to show consistent results. Agree on measures at the start and review them at six months.

Should I choose a project or a retainer?

Choose a project for a single launch or announcement, and a retainer for continuous media relations. Define the scope and extras in writing either way.
