TikTok PR means short vertical video, fast replies and visible proof that a real person stands behind the account. A Pew Research Center survey from August 2026 found that 20% of U.S. adults regularly get news on TikTok, up from 3% in 2020. I am Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W, and the rules we apply to reporters now apply to feeds and creators too.

How big is TikTok as a news source?
TikTok is a news source for about one in five U.S. adults, and for far more than that among adults under 50. Pew Research Center reported on October 19, 2026 that 20% of U.S. adults regularly get news on TikTok, based on a survey fielded August 24 to 30, 2026. The same share was 3% in 2020.
| Group | Regularly get news on TikTok, 2025 | Regularly get news on TikTok, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| All U.S. adults | 20% | 20% |
| Ages 18 to 29 | 43% | 39% |
| Ages 30 to 49 | 25% | 25% |
| Ages 50 to 64 | 10% | 11% |
| Ages 65 and older | 3% | 4% |
Source: Pew Research Center, October 2026. Among adults who use TikTok, Pew reports that 53% regularly get news there, compared with 22% in 2020. Pew's March 2026 analysis also found that 37% of U.S. adults say they use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021, in its summary of facts about Americans and TikTok.
The numbers matter for the 30 to 49 group in particular. A quarter of those adults get news on the platform, which is hard to square with the idea that TikTok is only a youth channel.
What does a changing media world demand of PR?
A changing media world demands that PR teams move faster, put people in front of logos and show proof on camera. I have watched each of these three demands grow over the past few years, and each one changes how a program is built.
- Speed. A reporter or a creator who needs a source on deadline will use the first credible person who replies, so a company needs approved facts and a named spokesperson ready before the call.
- People over logos. Audiences on short-form video respond to a face and a voice, so the executive or expert who speaks for a brand matters more than the brand mark.
- Proof on camera. A claim that can be shown, such as a product in use or a number on a screen, travels further than a claim that is only stated.
That is my view from running PR programs, not a survey finding. The practical lesson is that media relations and social video are no longer separate departments. My earlier piece on media relations strategy for busier reporters covers the first demand, and the social media PR playbook covers cadence and crisis rules for the second and third.
What does TikTok demand of brand content?
TikTok demands content made for the platform: short, vertical, quick to the point and honest about who is speaking. Repurposed television spots and press releases read as out of place in a feed.
- Open with the point in the first seconds, not a logo or an introduction.
- Let a named person speak, whether a founder, a product lead or a vetted creator.
- Show the product or proof on screen instead of describing it.
- Disclose paid relationships clearly, under platform and advertising rules.
- Reply in the comments within the hour, because a fast reply is part of the content.

How does TikTok change earned media?
TikTok changes earned media by giving brands another place where coverage starts, because a creator or a short clip can reach a reporter before a pitch does. A brand should plan for that path as part of its media program, not apart from it.
In practice I tell clients to treat a strong TikTok moment the way they treat a news hook. If a clip earns attention, the next step is to give reporters the facts behind it, with the same verified numbers a pitch would carry. Gartner has predicted that growing use of large language models will double PR and earned media budgets by 2027, which I wrote about in why that is good news for brands. Coverage that begins on a short clip can still end up in the sources those tools read.
Where does 5W stand on TikTok?
The Manifest's New York City TikTok directory ranks 5WPR number four, with 43 reviews and a 4.9 rating, as read on November 5, 2026. The Manifest is a business site that builds its directories on client reviews, so I read the ranking as a statement from clients, not a trophy.
The directory's order is not simply review count. SmartSites sits at number three with 370 reviews, and Power Digital leads with 66, which is why I would tell any brand to read the reviews themselves. The Manifest also named 5W Digital (HOW) one of the most-reviewed TikTok marketing agencies in New York in March 2024, and the full details are on the 5W page about the listing. Brands can see how the work is organized on the social media marketing agency page.
What should a brand do first on TikTok?
A brand should pick one spokesperson, one subject it can prove on camera and one reply window, then publish on that plan for thirty days before judging it. Starting small keeps the program honest about what it can sustain.
I would also drop the assumption that TikTok is a channel for the young. The Pew data shows a quarter of adults aged 30 to 49 getting news there, and that is the age group that runs most buying decisions at the companies I work with.
